CMU 210 Commercial Music Theory

Prerequisite: MUS 112.

This course includes the study of modulation techniques, rhythmic devices, and melodic contour in traditional and commercial music genres. Special attention is given to the Nashville Number system, Jazz harmony and extensions, and specific harmonic functions used in commercial, gospel, and Christian contemporary music. Rhythm chart writing is emphasized and analytical techniques are applied to various literature. Harmonic function is taught through "praxis" methodology.
