SW 409 Field Seminar I

Field Seminar I is designed to equip students with the essential knowledge, skills, and professional mindset required to successfully navigate their social work internships. Through a combination of theory and practical preparation, students will explore the expectations and realities of internship placements in various social service settings. Key topics include understanding the roles and responsibilities of a social worker, developing effective communication skills, making ethical decisions, and enhancing cultural competence. Students will also learn how to build professional relationships with clients, supervisors, and colleagues while gaining insights into the dynamics of social work practice in diverse environments. Through case studies, role-playing exercises, and reflective discussions, participants will develop confidence and a clear plan to approach their internships with preparedness and professionalism. This course also emphasizes self-care strategies, stress management, and setting personal and professional goals to maximize internship success. By the end of this course, students will have a solid foundation to start their internship experience with a strong sense of readiness, professionalism, and a commitment to ethical social work practice.
